The Nantes-style carrot

The Nantes carrot is the most popular among gardeners. Cylindrical in shape, measuring 12 to 18 cm, tender and very sweet, it makes an excellent summer carrot. It quickly develops a high sugar content that it retains for several months in a cold room; this is why most Nantes carrots are not ideal storage carrots, unless you have a very efficient cold room.

Advice from the seed producer and author

Yves Gagnon

Carrot growing conditions

Carrots tolerate light frosts, so they can be sown early in spring. They require a sunny location and light, deep, moist soil rich in humus. They are best grown on beds or ridges. In clay soils, suitable cultivars should be chosen, such as miniature carrots, Chantenays, or Danvers. Stony soils produce forked carrots, while compacted soils prevent the roots from reaching their full size. Since carrots are frugal, soil amendments are generally not necessary if the previous crop has received a good supply of compost. However, poor soil can be amended with 500 kg of mature compost per 100 m2. No nitrogen fertilizers should be used, as they produce hairy, bitter carrots. The ideal pH for growing carrots is between 5.5 and 6.8.

Carrot crop rotation

Carrots are grown at the end of the rotation after growing demanding plants. They are often found in the third year of the rotation, before growing green manure.

Carrot Companionship

Carrots can be grown in association with beets, parsnips, kohlrabi, turnip, rutabaga and radishes. Despite common recommendations to this effect in the literature, close companionship with onions should be avoided, which reduces air circulation around the lily leaves, thus promoting the appearance of fungal diseases. However, carrot and onion beds can be grown together to advantage. Chinese coriander has a repellent effect on the carrot fly. It can be sown in the row every 50 cm; ideally, two coriander sowings should be made, one at the same time as the carrots and the other 1 month later. Radish seeds sown in the row every 10 cm allow the row to be marked and thus the first hoeing can be carried out without harming the germinating seeds. Peas and beans are also good neighbors for carrots.
