My father, Yves Gagnon , has not stopped since his decisive meeting with Brother Armand Savignac , to explore the field of vegetable genetics in order to flush out and to experiment with cultivars demonstrating potential adapted to the Quebec climate , offering heady flavor and aromas, developing attractive shapes and colors, exhibiting productivity and resistance.

A sublime garden
Alongside his work as a seed grower, my father, with the help of my mother, Diane Mackay , has never stopped develop the Jardins du Grand-Portage which they opened to the public at the end of the 1980s. They created a haven of beauty and peace conducive to wonder and contemplation, a reserve of biodiversity favorable to the presence , in my yard, of a multitude of birds, butterflies, insects, reptiles and amphibians.

My mother in all this?
Since meeting Denis Lafrance , then a traveling teacher in organic agriculture, my mother, Diane Mackay, developed a strong interest in traditional herbalism thanks to some marigold oil he had given him to treat my big brother Samuel's irritated bottom. Very impressed by the effectiveness of this therapeutic oil, it has since continued to cultivate and experiment a quantity of simple ones with which it produces numerous tinctures, oils and ointments. She has no less than a hundred aromatic and medicinal species in her garden. and it offers numerous training courses in the field. It is a producer of more than 80% of medicinal, aromatic and ornamental plant seeds in the catalog. A meticulous work that no longer holds any secrets for her.

In 2019 , she signed a book on the subject: 40 medicinal plants for the family pharmacy which is in its third printing. An important favorite for herbalists because of rigorous information , photos exceptional and many simple and accessible recipes that we find there.
I am involved in the family business
In 2015 , a little overwhelmed by the amount of work generated by the production and sale of seeds as well as by the current digital shift, My parents suggested that I take over the sale and marketing of the seeds they produced.

I had still regularly accompanied my parents during seed festivals and I grew up among the Grand-Portage Gardens!

It was in winter 2015 More specifically. I had just completed studies at the ITHQ in restaurant management and sommelier. However, in the fall of 2014, I was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis, which inflamed my knees, a condition incompatible with a restaurant job, which is very physically demanding. So I accepted their proposal , with at first a feeling of imposture and a little pain at having to leave the restaurant business, a passion for me. I always knew that I would manage my own business one day, without knowing exactly in which field.

Since then, I have learned a lot about gardening and seed production. Today, I am the proud director of Semences du Portage , and I share with you, thanks to this story published in 4 stages, more than 50 years of family history!
I feel more at home than ever. and I am so happy to spread thousands of seeds in the French-speaking world, to contribute to develop ecological gardening and of collaborate with inspiring and passionate people.

I first processed the orders, alone from my apartment on Marie-Anne Street in Montreal. At the time, I only sold seeds produced by my parents and my father's books.

Then I moved into a larger apartment in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, where I dedicated a double living room to my business. It was supposed to be both my office and my living room, but the pandemic arrived and my living room quickly became a parcel warehouse. I had the good idea of adding sowing equipment to my catalog. A nice chaos, let's say!

It's 2021! It was a time when people lined up outside stores. Every day, my employee would leave with a cart and wait 45 minutes to mail the dozens of packages that day. Thanks to the growth of the company and especially because of the pandemic-driven agricultural boom (and also because I was expecting my second child) , in the fall of 2021 I rented a small commercial space on Sainte-Catherine Street, near Pie-IX Boulevard.

I was able to gradually increase my inventories, expand my offerings, develop an urban garden center and offer a collection point that was easily accessible to our customers. Today, it offers many essential products and accessories for establishing and maintaining an ecological garden. In addition to selling the seeds produced by my parents, I now work with 10 skilled and dedicated Quebec seed producers . This wonderful team has allowed me, for over 5 years, to devote myself 100% to managing and improving my business.

What do I like best about my job?
Prepare the new seed catalog with help from my producers and meet you at the many seed festivals!
My successor?
I'm working on it! My eldest daughter keeps telling me that she'll be like Grandpa when she grows up. The joy they have in going to the gardens and playing in the dirt, collecting pine cones, flowers, bark and observing frogs, ants and butterflies!
