Advice from the seed producer and author

Yves Gagnon

Leek growing conditions

Leeks are frost-resistant. Winter cultivars survive easily in the garden in most regions.
Unlike onion and garlic, leek is not very sensitive to photoperiod because it does not produce
bulb. Its cultivation is relatively easy apart from the leek moth whose larvae parasitize the plants
From June to September. Leeks thrive in soils rich in organic matter, loose, deep, and fresh. They require mature compost. To grow them, add 1 t of mature compost per 100 m2. The optimal pH for growing them is between 6 and 7.5.

Leek crop rotation

Leeks are grown in the second year of rotation with plants that require mature compost. You should wait at least four years before growing another lily in the same location.

Companion planting of leeks

Since leeks must be hilled to obtain a long white stem, sufficient space must be ensured for this, which is not possible if the plants are too close together. Leeks grow well alongside lettuce, chicory, celery, celeriac, spinach, beetroot, and brassicas. Avoid planting leeks with Fabaceae, which react poorly to their presence.
