Description

The Novagryl P-19 floating row cover is a lightweight protective veil (19 g/m²) made of 3 layers of non-woven fibers, manufactured in France. It is a professional-grade product: under the fabric, the sun's heat accumulates during the day and is retained at night, creating a microclimate 3 to 5 °C warmer than the outside temperature.

Result: you can plant 2 to 3 weeks earlier in the spring and harvest for several weeks longer in the fall.

Benefits

  • Protects against frost from 0 to −3 °C — and up to −6 °C by doubling the fabric at the end of the day
  • Lets light (82%), rain, and air pass through: no need to remove it for watering
  • Also protects against wind, harsh weather, and insect pests (flea beetles, carrot flies, cucumber beetles)

When to use it

  • In spring (late April to mid-June): get a head start on your direct sowings and acclimate your young plants: vegetables, herbs, annuals, and tropical plants are stressed by sudden temperature fluctuations
  • In autumn (late August to November): give fruit-bearing vegetables the heat they need to finish ripening, and extend your succession crops: bok choy, rapini, kale, lettuce, mizuna, carrots, spinach, radishes
  • During the season: remove the fabric during the day once it reaches 25 °C, and remove it completely when nights stay above 15 °C

Installation in 4 steps

  1. Install immediately upon sowing or planting, on a sunny day, so that the heat begins to accumulate
  2. Place the fabric over hoops spaced 4 feet apart: the air volume promotes growth and avoids contact with foliage (disease, stress). On well-established crops, it can also be laid directly
  3. Leave some slack in the center: the plants will grow underneath
  4. Secure all sides well with weights (stones, soil bags, or garden staples); this is what retains the heat

Tip: choose your size by adding about 10% for weighing down the sides, the hoops, and the slope of the ground.
