Growing conditions for lamb's lettuce
Corn salad thrives in the cool conditions of spring and autumn. It is best grown in full sun in loose, fresh, humus-rich soil. It tolerates frost but cannot withstand extreme heat. Consistent moisture is essential for its quality. The soil can be amended with 500 kg of mature compost per 100 m2. The optimal pH for its cultivation is between 6 and 7.
Corn salad crop rotation
Lamb's lettuce is normally grown in the second year of rotation with other demanding plants.
mature compost. However, as it grows very quickly, it can be grown at all stages of the rotation, provided it is given the right fertilization.
Lamb's lettuce companionship
Lamb's lettuce can be combined with all leafy vegetables which, like lamb's lettuce, require mature compost. It can
occupy the space intended for another later crop species; the 2 species will thus be able to
overlap for a while until the corn salad harvest. Thus, corn salad makes an excellent companion for brassicas that are transplanted after the cabbage maggot has laid its eggs. It can also be associated with peppers and cucumbers. In the fall, corn salad grows well alongside other cool-climate crops, such as Chinese cabbage, winter radishes, lettuces, chicories, spinach, and other leafy vegetables.
