Fennel growing conditions
Fennel is a cool-climate vegetable that requires constant moisture; it reacts poorly to high heat, which causes it to ripen prematurely. In southern areas, it is grown for an early summer or fall harvest. In northern areas, it can be grown for a summer or fall harvest. It is frost-resistant, but since it reacts poorly to frost, it is best grown after the risk of frost has passed. Fennel is grown in full sun. Its roots should be disturbed as little as possible, so care must be taken when transplanting. Fennel thrives in light, well-drained, cool, and humus-rich soils. Amend the soil with 1 t of mature compost per 100 m2. It is grown at a pH between 6.5 and 7.
Fennel Crop Rotation
Fennel is normally grown in the second year of rotation, after growing plants that require young compost.
Companion planting of fennel
Fennel gets a bad rap in horticultural literature. It is said to be a poor neighbor for most vegetable species. However, it does grow well with celery and celeriac. It can also be grown with brassicas and other leafy vegetables. It is a poor companion for tomatoes, onions, peas, and beans.
