Sunflower growing conditions
The sunflower is a plant that produces wherever corn grows. It tolerates spring frosts very well. Sunflowers take up a lot of space and require full sunlight. They are greedy and deplete the soil. To grow them, the soil should be amended with semi-ripe compost at a rate of 1 t/100 m2 or one shovelful per plant. The optimal pH for growing them is between 6 and 7.5.
Sunflower Crop Rotation
Sunflowers rarely take a place in the rotation. They are mostly grown at the edge of the garden where they act as an annual windbreak. If they do take a place in the rotation plan, however, they would preferably be grown at the head of the rotation. However, the soil should be amended abundantly the following year, as sunflowers are greedy and exhaust the soil.
Sunflower Care
The sunflower is not a very capricious plant. It has the ability to seek out from the soil what it needs to grow. Regular hoeing at the beginning of the season controls competition, which subsequently becomes almost non-existent. You can also apply a plant mulch at the base of the plants.
or establish an intercrop, white clover for example.
